Dianne Nauer

Dianne was one of three junior associates who joined PSI in the early 1990’s.  Like the others she discovered that the learning curve from being a “counselor” to becoming a psychotherapist is a steep one indeed!

Her path to becoming a therapist was a roundabout one.  She began working with people professionally as a childbirth educator in the late 70’s.  It became apparent to her that how people responded to the complex situations of pregnancy and child-rearing was influenced the most by the feelings that they brought to the situation and by what they anticipated would happen to them.  She found teaching provided a way to impact those experiences and her interest in the mind/body connection began then.  As her fascination  with these connections grew she decided to get more involved, returning to school to complete a nursing degree from the University of Washington (1985).

Dianne rarely looks this serious! ;-)

She followed a successful career as a labor/delivery nurse, and became even more intrigued with the interactions between the mind and body, and how clear it was to her that the two couldn’t be separated when looking at who people are and do what they do.  Plus, looking at how even the natural process of birth had been turned into an “illness” supposedly requiring medical intervention started her questioning the biomedical models of health and illness.

Time to look at the mind side of the equation…

In what seems a profession-wide tradition, Dianne’s interest in therapy began with her own.  As many before her, she discovered that inside even “normal people” are profound experiences and she became absorbed by a different kind of birthing!   She started as one of the lead facilitators in PSI’s Guided Breathwork groups in 1990.  By 1991, ready for another challenge, she asked to participate as a cotherapist in family and couples’ sessions.  Captivated by the experience,  she returned to the U of W to undertake her Master’s Degree in Psychosocial Nursing (graduated 1993).  Her internship was at PSI and Dianne became a full staff member after completing school.  She received her certification as a Nurse Practioner in  Adult\Adolescent Mental Health in 1994.

Dianne is married and has three children, dogs and a cat   Her personal interests include cross-stitch, yoga exercises and U of W football (Go Huskies!).  Her main professional interests currently include the dynamics of change, the role of the unconscious in making life choices and, of course, the connections between emotional and physical wellness.

Dianne is also PSI’s Vice-President In Charge of Shopping!
