Okay, new 8-foot finally: Paranoia (the original one). I also AA Full Comboed Twinbee on Standard, and I didn't look at the screen for the first 32 notes. I think that's my 9th 8-footer now...

  1. Dam Dariram

  2. B4U

  3. If You Were Here (B4 ZA Beat Mix)

  4. Absolute

  5. Healing Vision

  6. Synchronized Love

  7. Dynamite Rave Long Ver.

  8. Hot Limit

  9. DXY!

  10. Paranoia

Wow, and I can't count. Maybe it's time to try a 9.

Further tweaking

With the help of the kind messageboarders over at b3ta, I'va adjusted the design a bit here. I made the borders thinner, increased the text size, darkened the blue, and just for kicks made the sky darker (in non-IE browsers - IE users are stuck with a gray sky. Oddly suitable, actually. I also went a bit crazy with the title text (the stuff that shows up when you hover over various things). In case it wasn't clear, this page's design is supposed to be a vague allusion to CRPGs such as Final Fantasy. I was originally going to have a much more accurate and annoying design, but decided against it.
Some interesting features you might not have noticed: A little dot appears next to the arrow down there for each comment posted in reply to a particular blog entry, and you can see a preview of the comment by hovering over it. Clicking on it should take you to that comment, although I haven't had a page big enough to check whether the anchoring works right. In the future, I will likely have a javascript that sets the background color according to the time of day.

Keeping promises

Okay, I did say I'd "write about the flood", and I'm not likely to be done with this CSS mess for a while, so here you go. At about 4:30 AM this yesterday morning, I noticed a persistent thunking sound, and decided to investgate. (I'm in the basement, as I've been sleeping on the couch down here for a while - that's another (soon-to-be-written, perhaps) story.) Following my ears, I found a substantial amount of water dripping from the ceiling. This has happened before. I ran upstairs to seek the cause of this unnatural meteorological phenomenon, and sure enough most of the kitchen floor is covered with water. I waded over to the sink, and shut off the water to the refrigerator's icemaker. The hose to it has a tendency to break... The mess was too big to clean up on my own, and just because the source of the water had been shut off didn't mean the damage had stopped. I woke my parents and reported the situation to them, and we spent the next few hours drying things off. The leaky dog didn't simplify matters any. Anyway, the net result is that we ended up throwing away a few useless old books (Beginner's guide to Windows 95, etc.) and the basement ceiling is looking slightly worse than it already was.

Hacking my blog style

7/29/2004 16:39

This is just a post for me to mess with. I'll post about the flood once I get this done.

Significance?

7/28/2004 17:16

Okay, I've been not blogging lately, partly because I've not had anything significant to say. I think I'd probably be better off doing at least one entry every day, as more of a journal, no matter how trivial my life has been that day. I mean, there's always got to be something to write about, right? And it's not like anyone actually reads this stuff. (If you do, let me know.)
So, um... what exactly am I supposed to write in a blog? I've never quite understood that. I suppose random links couldn't hurt. The details of my daily life would seem rather pointless (I have just finished eating an extravagant peanut butter sandwich)... It'd be really nice if I had a camera phone, as there are some spontaneous pictures I'd like to have taken and put up on a blog. A few nights ago there was a Walgreens sign, with no text on it advertising a special. One side of the fluorescent lights inside it had gone out, and directly above it was the moon, the same half of which was illuminated. I'm not about to devote another 950 or so words to describe the hypothetical picture, but I'm just as unlikely to spend a few hundred dollars on a cameraphone to save myself this trouble anytime I'm struck by the imagery of reality. So, what to do? I don't think carrying around the family's digital camera all the time is a good idea, and it's a different kind of photography anyway. Perhaps the logical extension of the cameraphone idea is the eyetap device, which just records exactly what you see. There's no messing around with exposure and f-stops. Mom wants to use the computer now (more later on why mine isn't working - arrgh postponed).

ITG-style arrow emoticons

7/18/2004 19:18

I created these for ITGFreak, but anyone who wants to can use them (see license below).

I'm sure there's some CSS trick you can use to make them overlap properly.
I'm putting these, and the , under a Creative Commons license. I'd suggest, if possible, putting "Arrows and mines by NMcCoy" in the View More Emoticons popup, or if that's not possible then the FAQ would be fine. Also, I'd appreciate not linking it directly from my site. Thanks!

A new 8: DXY!

From the Ground Up

7/13/2004 21:14

It's a long and embarrassing story, but basically my computer's been broken for the last couple months. (Horribly failed fix to a slightly failed kernel upgrade.) I've put a new hard drive in it, and am putting Mandrake on it right now - I still need to hook up my old hard drive afterwards to recover all my personal data, get the drivers for everything (nvidia, blah) installed, do some weird trickery with home directories, transfer everything from this computer that I've been using in the interim, install all the programs that I normally use, make sure those programs find my old configuration files, and probably some other stuff I've forgotten.

DDR (ow) Progress (ow)...

7/12/2004 18:41

Two more new 8s passed. Assume Heavy/Maniac unless otherwise listed.
Synchronized Love
Dynamite Rave Long Mix (ow! evil song!) (trying to pass long songs while we have 5th, as it looks like it'll be the one transformed into ITG)
Also:
Full comboed Dam Dariram Heavy (This song hurts my feet, but it's fun so I play it anyway.)
AA on Burning Heat (Did I do this already?)

DDR Progress!

7/10/2004 03:25

I've now passed a total of 5 8-foot songs!
July 8
If You Were Here (B4 ZA Beat Mix)
July 9
Absolute - got this one on the first sight-read. One of the easier 8s, I think.
Healing Vision

Okay... that was weird.

7/8/2004 00:03

I just had a song stuck in my head, and was humming it, when I decided I wanted to listen to it... so I turned on an internet radio station that plays that song sometimes (from the Open Location dialog directly, rather than going to the site - so it wasn't me seeing a playlist or requesting it) and that very song was playing. Spooky, yet convenient.

B4U on Heavy (my second 8-footer). And some other stuff, but most of it's not important (Burning Heat! Standard x3 Hidden). I'm planning on a trip to try In The Groove, perhaps tomorrow.
