"The Return of Summer"

The sun has returned. It first appeared on Friday, wrapping the city in sudden warmth and drying out the nooks and crannies. At last the white shoes, lightweight clothes, and sunglasses could come out of hiding, and come out they did.

Now in our second day of certified summer weather, The city has erupted in festivites. Seattle Center is alive with the opening of billionaire Paul Allen's Experience Music Project. The bridges across the ship canal keep rising and lowering as beautiful, sleek sailboats float out to Puget Sound, their tall masts peeking out through the open spans. And Fremont overflows with people who have come to watch the classic Summer Solstice Parade (famous for its nude bicyclists) and roam the streets looking for good food, good beer, and bargains.

Only one thing mars this perfect weekend: the knowledge that it will soon end. I still have two more days of school, and since the days will be lovely and hot, the children are bound to be restless and bored. No one can compete with the sun in Seattle. It grabs everyone's attention with its solar flexes, including the teachers'. Thank God for summer.
