"In My Opinion . . ."

Sometimes the well runs dry when I look for ideas worthy of an essay. Or maybe it's just my brain that dries up. Regardless, It's been over a month since I last wrote anything at all, and March marches on. I realize, however, that numerous unrelated events keep occuring, and for the sake of posterity I might as well jot them down. In years to come I'll look back fondly on them (or perhaps my husband will use them to try to jolt me out of senility).
Meg flew off to Europe last weekend. After a hectic week of final exams, papers, packing, and saying good-bye to friends, my daughter took off for an incredible adventure. She's in Italy for Spring quarter, first in Venice and then in Rome, studying in a University of Washington English program. I love her recent e-mail message: "I'm speaking lots of Italian - it's making my head hurt." She'll stay on in Europe for the whole summer, traveling wherever she wants and just having fun. She's earned it.
Will competes in Mock Trial. This is the weekend his high school team fights for the state title and a berth in the Nationals in May in South Carolina. I won't know until Sunday if they succeed, but they have an awfully good chance. Modeled after the Law School Moot Court program, Mock Trial is a fantastic experience coached by an outstanding teacher. Mr. Nagel is considered probably the best in the state, and since he plans to retire after this year, it would be particularly fitting for this team to go "all the way."
News from abroad:
Alan, a former exchange student, announced his engagement. He had the good sense to fall in love with a beautiful, intelligent American woman.
Emilie, the daughter of close friends in Denmark, has invited me to her confirmation. I'd give my eye tooth to fly over there for the May celebration, because I'll tell you, those Danes have turned partying into an art.
Spring break comes in two weeks, and then the rest of the school year should careem by. Right now, though, there's no earth-shaking news. Well, perhaps I lie. March 26 is the day they implode the Kingdome. Apparently this event is not only going to be covered extensively in Seattle but ESPN2 is going to give it world coverage. I hope to have my muse back soon and write a lucid, intelligible essay once more. After all, I have legions of readers to satisfy. (Just how many is a legion, anyway?)
