Love Pennies

Every day or two, Luke comes up to me and smiles and holds out a closed hand. I smile back. I kiss him and I hold out my hand. He drops a shiny penny into it. Sometimes he continues to hold out his hand. I kiss him again, and he gives me another shiny penny. On lucky days, I've gotten upwards of a half-dozen.

I'm not sure when the love pennies started. Years ago. A love penny has to of the current year and very shiny. Each year, there is a love penny drought in January and February, until the new ones start showing up.

I save the pennies. There are small piles surrounding my computer at work, and a half-full jar in my home office. When the new year starts and the drought is on, I spend them on chocolate. Good chocolate, not just a Hershey bar – nothing else would be worthy.

Have I mentioned lately that Luke is a sweetie?
