The Khalkha are considered the descendents of the family of Chingis Haan. In ancient to medieval times only Khalkha Mongols could claim the title Haan, or khan. Given the almost sacred nature of Chingis Haan, few Mongols ever transgressed this law, not even Timur i Lenk, better known as Tamerlane, a man of great cruelty and pride who wreaked unholy havoc in his time. Geographically, the Khalkha were considered eastern Mongols. The Buryat Mongols were from the north and the Oirat Mongols were from the west. The modern country of Mongolia is comprised of a large majority of Khalkha Mongols.
