13 June 1993, Sunday

At about 4:30am I was robbed. They took a lot of stuff: my field jacket, shoulder bag, duffel bag, pair of pants, my maroon T-shirt, both 35mm cameras, my dictionary, swiss knife, binoculars, flashlight, all my used film, harmonica, my keys, my glasses, first aid kit, Tracy's pots w/cup, even my body deoderant crystal.

What happened was that I was sleeping in a room with 4 other guys and we had left the door to our room unlocked. I woke up early in the morning, because the door was open, allowing the hallway light to shine on my face. There was also the rustling sound of someone going through my belongings next to my bed. I opened my eyes and saw someone just leaving the room. I looked around, noticed some of my things missing, and suddenly realized what had happened. I grabbed for my glasses, but they were gone. So were my pants. Finally, I just grabbed a towel and ran after him down the stairway. In the lobby downstairs it was dark and without my glasses I couldn't tell if the doorman was sleeping on the couch. I went to the front door and pushed. They were open, so I walked outside, barefooted. It was dark and I couldn't see a thing. I went back inside, since it was already too late. At around 6:00am a bunch of people checked out from the floor above us. I thought nothing of it at the time.

When our guide, BeeBee, arrived he called the police. They came over and questioned a number of people in the hotel as well as myself. The doorman said that he found it strange that the group that left at 6am didn't bother to checkout. They were going back to Erdenet, an eight hour drive. The police called ahead to their Erdenet station to hold that car. At 9am the police came to receive my statement. During the statement BeeBee informed me that since my statement and the young doorman's statement did not match, they would be taking the doorman to jail for 'further questioning'. If they found anything, BeeBee would let me know.

I have to admit that I really felt like packing up what I had left and going home, but I knew I wouldn't. It is such a shock to be robbed.
