More Backpack Contents
More Necessities:

Compass

Knife

Tent with Fly (there were some folks that used tarps, but do you really want that mouse crawling over you in the middle of the night ?)

Sunglasses w/chums or something similar

Sunscreen

Bug Juice

Money (a couple of surprise opportunities along the trail)

First Aid Kit (mole skin, bandages, aspirin, etc.)

Fire starter plus lighter and/or storm-proof matches

Back Packing Stove (We used a white gas stove with carefully calculated amount of fuel.)

Map/tide table (provided at registration)

Small Flashlight or Headlamp w/extra batteries (My hiking partner had a headlamp and after years of using them just for climbing its now replacing my little Mag-Lite ® for overnight back packing)

Signaling device (small mirror)

Cover for backpack or everything in pack in plastic.

Plastic sacks (1/day) for garbage

Sack to hang up food

50' of twine/line for hanging food

50' of light line for drying clothes

tooth brush/toothpaste

soapsuds for you and the dishes

sleeping bag/pad (in covered backpack or plastic bag). We both had down bags and didn't have any issues.

pots/pans (my partner had titanium...what a great saver of weight)

cooking/eating utensils (plastic)

lightweight camping towels (one for you and one for dishes/misc.)

cup for tea/coffee, etc.

Clothing( here is where you can save some weight):

rain jacket/pants (consider super light weight gear hear to save pounds if you can afford it. I took my traditional heavy gear which I use for skiing.)

gaiters (this was a last minute addition which should be mandatory on this trip)

extra pair of uwear

bicycling gloves (another last minute addition which was great on the ladders)

pile hat (even in August, I had this on at night)

baseball cap (sun/rain shade)

extra pair of lightweight shorts

extra pair of socks

light pile jacket or sweater

poly long underwear bottoms

extra ss poly shirt

Optional Items:

Wet Wipes (2 a day)

Back packing pillow (I had never used one until this year...its just right with your pile jacket/sweater underneath)

Trekking Poles (I am not a believer and they get in the way on the ladders. My hiking partner used them though and swears by them.)

Camera (Point and Shoot to keep down the weight) with fresh battery installed

Extra roll(s) of film

Another set of uwear, socks, ss shirt (you can hope there will be enough sun to wash/dry stuff but there wasn't for us even in late July/early August)

Barometer- this is on my wrist every time I hike and is my 11th essential.

Duct tape- ok, I admit it. I wasn't a believer until I borrowed Eric's tape twice...and he used it to fix his mouse-derived back pack hole!
