Introduction: I will be the first to admit that I had the time to plan this trip pretty thoroughly. I was on sabbatical at the time so everything that added up to 45 pounds was analyzed for need and efficiency. My hiking partner had between 45-50 pounds in his pack, but most of that difference consisted of additional food and a bit more clothing. Generally speaking, we were in synch with what we took.

I am also biased in certain areas...for example, I would never use an external frame pack for this type of trip. Where I believe there is limited flexibility in choice, I will mention it.

There shouldn't be any big surprises for experienced trekkers or back packers, but I added or changed a couple of things after talking to a friend that had done this before.

Necessities without compromise:
  1. Internal soft backpack of about 4500 cubic inches or more. (With all the maneuvering over roots, traversing of slippery logs, and climbing up and down ladders, I can't imagine something less fun than an external frame pack.)
  2. Water filter or chemicals to treat the water. (I used the MSR MiniWorks © water filter. I am a little biased towards its tough construction and serviceability in the back country. I also like the idea of not using chems in my water...besides its kind of nice to get away from the camp and explore the streams.)
  3. Container(s) for approximately 2 liters of liquid (I used a bladder system that came with my Lowe pack. I think this approach is perfect for both day hiking or overnights since it gives you the opportunity to sip at any time. However, my partner used traditional bottles and was quite happy.)
  4. Container to store enough water for you and your partner (4- 5 liters for cooking and general drinking) Ok, this really might be optional but its a heck of a lot more efficient! More Backpack Contents
