Cotton thread is probably the most commonly used and available embroidery thread today. It is versatile, coming in a number of finishes, both shiny and matte, and a number of weights. It is a staple of a needleworker's repertoire.

DMC SIX STRAND EMBROIDERY FLOSS (stranded cotton) comes in 8.7 yard (8 meter) skeins in 454 solid and 18 variegated colors. There used to be more variegated colors but several of them were eliminated in 2002 and we are now sold out of all discontinued variegated colors). Actual thread color cards are available for $24.95.

ANCHOR SIX STRAND EMBROIDERY FLOSS (stranded cotton) comes in 8.7 yard (8 meter) skeins in 444 solid colors and 16 variegated colors. Actual thread color cards for floss only are available for $13.95. Actual thread color cards for both floss and pearl cotton are available for $22.50.

Anchor has new multicolor size 5 pearl cotton and embroidery floss. Both threads come in the same six colors:

These colors ONLY of Anchor are more expensive than their solid colors. Multicolor floss is 95 cents per skein and the multicolor pearl cotton is $1.65 per skein. Special Note: effective June 2006 the floss will be going to $1.00 per skein nand pearl to $1.75 per skein.

Anchor also now has 10 new size 5 pearl cotton/metallic blends (they call this Anchor Metallic Pearl but that name is a bit misleading because you may think it is all metallic, rather than a blend of cotton and metallic). This thread is available in 7 solid colors with metallic and 3 variegated colors with metallic. The colors all coordinate with solid colors of Anchor pearl cotton.

Needlepaints is a solid color cotton 6-stranded embroidery floss from Marilyn Leavitt-Imblum of Lavender and Lace fame. Available in 3 families, Lavenders, Orchid and Robins Egg Blue, these come in 10 meter (11 yard) skeins, for $2.00 each.

ANCHOR PEARL COTTON comes in a large range of colors. We currently stock all solid colors of size 5 and 12, about one-third the colors of size 8, and a few size 3 colors. We will special-order any color not in stock. Actual thread color cards for both floss and pearl cotton are available for $22.50. Anchor pearl cotton is available as follows:

GENTLE ART OVERDYED FLOSS (also known as Sampler Threads) is overdyed floss from yet another company. The colors have been developed with samplers in mind, and tend to be more monochromatic and subtle than those of the Leah's and Needle Necessities' overdyed flosses. No color cards are available, and dye lots vary considerably. The manufacturer currently offers these in 5 and 10 yard skeins, but we normally stock them only in the 10 yard skeins (which are more economical on a per yard basis). Colors are:

OVERDYED PEARL COTTON BY LEAH is made in four sizes, but now stocked by us in three of the four sizes: Size 5 (27 yards per skein); size 8 (68 yards per skein); and size 12 (68 yards per skein). WILDFLOWERS by Caron is a fine-weight cotton thread (sized between 8 and 12 pearl cotton) that comes in ALL THE SAME COLORS AS WATERCOLOURS (see color listing above under Watercolours). Use for hardanger, cross-stitch, canvas embroidery, etc.

DANISH FLOWER THREAD is the original Flower Thread. Produced by the Danish Handcraft Guild, this matte finish cotton thread has been dyed to simulate the colors produced with natural vegetable dyes. One strand is approximately equivalent in size to two strands of cotton floss. Colors are:

Note: Dye lots can vary considerably so be sure to buy enough for your project. Actual thread color cards are available for $11.00. In 1996 the skein yardage was reduced from 39 to 22 yards per skein.

DMC FLOWER THREAD is similar to Danish Flower Thread, except the color palette is similar to that of DMC cotton floss. Currently 180 colors are available. Please note that DMC has announced that as of December 31, 1999 DMC Flower Thread will no longer be available. We still have a limited supply of some colors but they are selling out quickly.

DMC MATTE EMBROIDERY COTTON (also known in French as "Retors Mat" or Article 89) is a soft, heavy, matte finish cotton which comes in only one size, size 4. Traditionally used for needlepoint/canvas embroidery, its uses certainly are not limited to that. It can be used for other forms of embroidery, including stumpwork. It was available in the US in 213 colors. PLEASE NOTE THAT DMC AS OF OCTOBER 2002 has totally discontinued selling this product in the US, and we have sold our entire inventory so this thread is no longer available from us.

DMC FLOCHE is a silky, loose-twist cotton thread typically used for cutwork embroidery. There were 87 colors available, most of which coordinate with DMC floss numbers. In 2002, DMC decided to discontinue selling in the US all but 20 colors of floche. All colors are listed below with a note as to which are/will be discontinued.

DMC BRODER SPECIAL (also known as "Brilliant Cutwork & Embroidery Thread") is used for cutwork, for eastern European embroidery, and is wonderful on canvas. Color numbers are the same as for DMC floss. PLEASE NOTE that DMC is totally discontinuing in the US all colors of this thread . These threads are only available from us while supplies last. Please note that we are totally out of white and ecru in both sizes. Available colors in size 12 WERE:

DMC TATTING COTTON is a 6-cord size 80 thread which used to come in 106 yard balls in 51 solid colors, plus 25 variegated colors. Please note that DMC has announced it will be discontinuing all but 9 variegated colors of tatting thread and all but 21 solid colors, so discontinued colors are available only as long as our supply lasts. Any colors below that say "Discontinued by DMC" are no longer available in our store. Any colors below that say "to be discontinued by DMC" are still available in limited quantities while supplies last. Tatting thread color cards are available for $10.50, or refer to the DMC floss color card for most solid colors (variegated colors are not pictured on floss color card). Available solid colors are:
