Communication Today (Parts of a WebZine article.)
I absolutely love technology. This era rocks for fun and new stuff. I was on the computer chatting with a couple of friends on two different chat programs and checking my email at the same time. I was quite happy and able to juggle this with out leaving anyone hanging or waiting for me. Then my cel phone rings. I answer saying politely hello only to hear hold on and then *click*. The next thing I know there are 5 people on the phone using 2 different 3 way calling plans. So at that moment I was communicating with 8 people and was actually managing to juggle all of them and stay with the program. That is until my pager went off and that just confused me beyond belief. I just lost all 8 thought trains and was completely derailed.
The sad part about this is that I told that story to another high tech geek friend of mine and they didn't even flinch. The one question they had was... "So was it work that paged you?" To me that spoke volumes about what corporations are doing to Geek J. Q. Public.
Needless to say it wasn't work. Just my little brother who couldn't get through on all of my busy lines.
I for a moment felt completely inadequate since it wasn't work and thought that maybe I am not doing enough. I realized that there are a lot of people out there that live that way. Then I just smiled. I was happy I didn't have to live that way with work so closely attached to me like a technical umbilical cord.
This whole thing kind of frightened me later as I was thinking about our future generations. Are they going to have virtual wires attached to them? Will they be completely wired for communication all the time? When they are taking a dump will the be sending email before flushing?
I can just see it. The toilet seats will be enabled with butt-print sensors and when you sit down it will know who you are. Can you imagine sitting down and hearing "You've got mail!" We have the voice technology so you could just speak in to the microphone above the TP and then when you were ready to send your email you would just simply flush!
How about a computer chip embedded in your hand so that when you are meeting people you could simply download all of their contact information and end the need for PDAs and business cards.
That one is a little creepy for me. I keep thinking about the whole Logans Run premise.
I wonder if the next generation or the generation after that will rebel against all of this technology. Maybe handwritten letters will come back in style again.
I remember when a rotary phone was the only option especially on a pay phone. Now everyone I know has more than 2 forms of communication. Even call waiting now doubles the call volume and increases the whole communication thing.
I think it is time to turn off my computer, unplug my phone, turn off my cel and turn off my pager and read a book.
Good night all. Till next time.
