Geek Girls
02/04/2000

Geek girls today can do, look and feel any way that they want to. Some gals don't wear make up, others have to have at least six shades of lipstick otherwise they feel deprived. Some gals collect figures from comics or cartoons, some collect crystal, while others collect jewelry. Some collect everything. Some are into minimalism.

There are an amazing amount of people who still see geek gals and box us into a stereotype of the ugly, taped glasses, sitting at our keyboards eating pizza and downing pop all the time. God forbid we should follow fashion, keep up with current affairs along with anything that might be considered 'in'. They expect us to be dateless wonders with no social skills or the desire to have them.

Surprise! We are as diverse as you can get. We are your Mothers, Sisters, girlfriends, bosses, subordinates, Aunts Grandmothers, sex symbols, teachers and mentors. We live, love, breathe and eat all that is new in technology and what is the latest in all thing technological, funky and fun.

It is a natural progression for women as they are constantly fixing all that goes wrong with stuff. When the TV/cable/satellite goes whacko who really ends up fixing it? When you want to use the microwave at the perfect setting who do you ask? Women. Right now I am only talking technology, but for the sake of argument lets just ask who do you go to when you have a broken heart? How about when you don't feel well?

You end up seeing the same women for that as well.

In today's society we women are so much more diverse in our skills that we have one distinct advantage in that we (women) network a lot better and trade skills and services so that we take care of ourselves so we are not completely reliant on men. This frees us up to instead of needing a man, being able to want a man and enjoy their company on a different level.

Trading services among women has been going on for generations, but the services in our time have gotten more and more diverse and widespread. With the internet and e-mail these services are also getting worldwide and national. The internet is a big facilitator of communication and social bonding. Women glom onto this because it is an area that we excel at.
